I know the focus isn't great, but... I saw this little mantis clinging to my fence one day and I couldn't resist running in the house to grab my camera. I loved how he kept turning his head side to side to watch me as I tried to find the best angle to take this shot. I don't have a ring-flash and had to use natural lighting which cast a huge shadow behind him. I thought about trying to Photoshop it out, but kind of liked its monster-like quality so what the heck - I left it in. I love those adorable red dots on his head (no I didn't put them there) and the strands of muscle or whatever that is (?) on his shoulders.
Imagine for a moment if insects had a sense a humor! Wouldn't that be wonderful?! As long as they don't play practical jokes on us, that is. Afterall, who would suspect THEM? hmmm... sounds like a good story linefor a children's book! A mischievous praying mantis...
Nicel little portrait - and I like the way you have captured the 'over the shoulder' look he is giving you!
Mantids always bring a smile to my face, especially when they start swivelling around to present you with that uncanny stare.
We had some babies hatch out under our kitchen window not long ago. They were shiny and brown as if made out of fine caramel, and their huge eyes were totally black which gave them a most alien expression! Imagine forty such faces swivelling at you!
Thank you! I need to buy a flash ring (um...ring flash?) that goes on the front of the lens so I can control the lighting better....and a dedicated macro lens, too, for that matter. Ah well, one of these days...
The red dots are a light sensing organ, like a 3rd eye, if I remember my entomology lesson correctly. Mantids are very cool in general...what a wonderful shot!
